Make the most of freshers' week

Freshers' week is a very important part of your university life. Partly because it's the first time you’ll be able to interact with your future university friends and also because it will be the first time you will become part of the university as a whole. So to help you out here are a few tips on how to make the most of your freshers' week.

Be open minded and friendly

The key to all is a willingness to be open and friendly to anyone and everyone. Try to get to know your flatmates as well as possible, they might have interests different to yours and this could open up new opportunities in your search for things like new music, new friends or maybe even a new sport. Some courses start earlier than others so some people in your flat might already have a group of friends, extend your friend network but don't let that stop you making your own group of friends. One of the great things about freshers' week is that most people are in EXACTLY the same position as you. Everyone is looking for new friends so don't be shy to introduce yourself to anyone!

Take part

Get yourself down to one of the many freshers' events that your university will undoubtedly be putting on, probably at your student union. These events will help you integrate into student life and give you great access to other freshers who, like yourself will just be looking to make friends. Get involved with course 'socials' (usually put on by student reps). They are a great way of meeting course mates from your lectures. This will help you to keep on building up a network of friends beyond your flatmates which can make things a lot easier when it comes to studying for your exams or finishing off late running essays in the library!

Play sport

Why not take up a new sport? Whether you're sporty or not it doesn't matter, try something new like ultimate frisbee. It's a great way of seeing what your university has to offer and it's another excellent way of making friends. Most of the sports teams/sections have 'socials' during freshers' week as a sort of initiation into your chosen sport. These are usually well organised and are really good nights out, although you may want to make sure you don't have anything planned for the day after.

Finally just enjoy freshers' week! You're only a fresher once so make the most of it while you can. Say yes to as many things as possible, go out, meet people and don't be afraid to have a good time!
